The exact calibration procedure might vary with different products. It generally involves using the instrument to test samples of one or more known values called "calibrators." 

The results are used to establish a relationship between the measurement technique used by the instrument and the known values.

The main reason for calibration is to ensure the instrument's reliability and that it can be trusted.

Measuring instruments like lux meters, anemometers, Thermo hygrometers, barometers, gas leak detectors, data loggers, and infrared thermometers are calibrated from time to keep them up to date.
